DNA repair and recombination: a delicate balance between genomic fidelity and diversity
Maintaining the fidelity of genetic information is a critical function of all organisms. In higher eucaryotes the accumulation of mutations can give rise to pathologies such as cancer or neurodegenerative diseases. However, evolution requires genetic changes. In the lab we are interested in understanding the basis of these two aspects by studying the mechanism involved in repairing DNA lesions induced by endogenous and exogenous stresses in mammalian cells and those conferring genetic diversity to the human pathogen Helicobacter pylori.
