IMAGING OF NEURODEVELOPMENTAL PHENOTYPES

InDEV team

Presentation OF the team

The InDEV Neuropediatrics team was created on January 1, 2019 at NeuroSpin, as a team of UNIACT (Unité de Recherche en Neuroimagerie Applicative Clinique et Translationnelle).

The InDEV team is co-supervised by the CEA and the UMR1141 "NeuroDiderot" unit, directed by Professor Pierre Gressens (Inserm, Université Paris Cité).

THEMATICS :

InDEV topics concern the study of brain development in typical children or children with early brain pathologies (epilepsy, microencephaly, brain tumors, neonatal stroke...) using structural and functional MRI. In sick children, we are particularly interested in the cerebral plasticity of the immature brain, which allows learning and a surprising functional efficiency considering the cerebral lesions.

Our multidisciplinary team (neuropediatricians, neuroscientists, neuropsychologists, engineers) shows the interest of an interface between basic and clinical research.

These pediatric studies, in collaboration with other groups at NeuroSpin or in the Ile de France region, focus on :

1- On the anatomical side : the changes that occur during development in relation to gyrification, the development of the medial temporal lobe by measuring regions of interest such as the hippocampus, amygdala, parahippocampal gyrus, the study of the white matter by means of diffusion MRI which provides information on myelination, anatomical connectivity...

2- On the functional side : the setting up and organization of neural networks that underlie the development of sensorimotor and cognitive functions, more specifically language and memory, as well as the plasticity of these networks in a healthy and pathological brain. To address these objectives, functional MRI (fMRI) paradigms are adapted for different developmental ages (infant to adolescent), controls and patients. We study the concomitant brain activities of the tasks. We are also interested in the functional activity at rest (functional connectivity) to better understand the development of neural networks.
