Progress toward a mobile artificial lung

CEA-Liten, a CEA Tech institute, has developed a battery that is lightweight, efficient, and highly reliable to power an artificial lung that can be transported in complete safety.

Today, patients in severe respiratory distress are confined to bed and connected to an artificial respirator at all times. The ANR Bio-Art Lung project's ambitious goal is to develop a mobile artificial lung that will enable patients to leave their rooms and move around the hospital for an hour a day. In research conducted as part of this project, CEA-Liten worked on the battery that will power this ventilator.

CEA-Liten scientists worked simultaneously on the battery's cell chemistry and pack architecture to ensure that it is both lightweight and flawlessly reliable. By using innovative materials, the teams succeeded in increasing the battery's energy density (the amount of energy that can be transported in a standard format). By cleverly arranging the cells in the pack, they also avoided the need for a dual battery pack to guarantee 100% uptime.

The new chemistry and new architecture combined should eventually halve the total weight of the battery without affecting its reliability or performance.
