ONE HEALTH: SIMULTANEOUSLY ADDRESSING HUMAN, ANIMAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
CEA’s environment and wellness research program emerged as part of a strong vision to extend the spectrum of research beyond human healthcare. This vision is well aligned with the One Health initiative launched by the United Nations and the OMS in 2010, and CEA-Leti is carrying out pioneering work on three interdependent subjects: human health, animal health and environmental health. Given that 60% of human infectious diseases have animal origins, it becomes obvious that human pandemics and zoonotics are interwoven and should be addressed together, in particular when researching emerging diseases.
MORE THAN 350 ACTIVE PATENTS
CEA-Leti’s technological foundation includes microelectronics, sensors, actuators and imagers, electronic systems, communications, and energy efficient devices. The institute has developed the proper interfaces between its historical technology base and living matter, benefitting from its strong knowledge of biomaterials, microfluidics and sample preparation, to name a few. These advances are protected by over 350 active patents and can be deployed for both products and services. Healthcare research accounts for more than 10% of CEA-Leti's activities. All five departments of CEA-Leti contribute to making advances in the healthcare technologies field: the Applications Department, the Department of Microtechnologies for Biology and Health and three other departments having a strong expertise in silicon and optical technologies, components and systems. With Clinatec, CEA-Leti also boasts a unique biomedical research center that includes a clinical applications section with an operating room, an intraoperative MRI, a scanner and magnetoencephalography (MEG) capabilities
ENCOURAGING THE CREATION OF STARTUPS
In order to have a strong and positive societal impact, create jobs and contribute to France and Europe's sovereignty in healthcare, CEA-Leti is increasing the number of industrial partnerships and the number of technological transfers to startups (e.g. Diabeloop, Iprasense, BAIO-DX), biotech companies, pharmaceutical laboratories and medical equipment manufacturers, including three major French players: Sanofi, Urgo and Ceva. CEA-Leti's technologies are being further developed and commercialized by startups that are often headed by former CEA-Leti research engineers-cum-entrepreneurs. Examples include Fluoptics (surgical aids), Avalun (delocalized analysis), Mag4Health (magnetoencephalography), Admir (cancer diagnostics), Direct Analysis (food safety) and Diamsens (water analysis).
