NeoLED facilitates the integration of LEDs into existing electrical wiring systems

The NeoLED LED lighting system can be plugged directly into existing home electrical outlets with no need for an adapter. The patented system is compact and cost-effective to manufacture. It was showcased at the Vivatech trade show in May.

New LED-type technologies can reduce the energy consumption of lighting systems by up to 85% and extend system lifespans. Unfortunately, these systems run on direct current, which makes it complicated to plug them into existing electrical wiring, which works on alternating current. Leti, a CEA Tech institute, developed NeoLED, a system that can operate off of alternating current without the need for a converter— which lowers costs and extends lifespans.

The NeoLED system consists of a reconfigurable matrix of LEDs. The LEDs are connected in series or in parallel to each other in small clusters so that the overall architecture can adapt to the voltage coming off the grid at all times. A dynamic management system built on a set of transistors on a PCB reconfigures the system's electrical assembly in real time.

In competing systems the number of active LEDs varies depending on the voltage. This patented system provides constant, high-quality lighting. It is suitable for low-power (residential) applications as well as for higher-power uses (public and industrial lighting). In the future, new functions—such as color—could also be integrated into NeoLED.
