The DRF at the CEA assemble approximately 6,000 scientists since January 2016.
New neurons appear inside the tumor microenvironment, contributing to the cancer’s development. These nerve cells stem from progenitors coming from the brain via the blood flow. This astounding discovery opens up a new research field regarding the role of the nervous system in cancer development, as well as the interactions between the vascular, immune and nervous systems with the tumorigenesis.
A team of CEA-Biam has uncovered a symbiotic behavior between magnetism-using bacteria and eukaryotic microorganisms.
Researchers from CEA-Iramis have designed a new experimental method using microwave photons that brings additional proof that the electrical charge of carriers may amount to a third or a fifth of the elementary charge of the electron. Moreover, the experiment shows that these fractionally charged carriers (called “anyons”) interact with microwave photons and can therefore be manipulated. This discovery is the first step towards the study of anyons’ quantum and statistical properties.
A collaboration involving the Irfu has discovered two hot gas “chimney” around the supermassive black hole of our Galaxy. They seemed linked to the large Fermi Bubbles, which implies a probable high activity from the black hole and the Milky Way central regions in the past.
Theoretical physicists from the IPhT designed a model of a system of highly correlated electrons subjected to a periodic disturbance. This model could be the first step towards the creation of superconducting materials maintaining room temperature, illuminated by a femtosecond laser…
A team of international researchers coordinated by the LSCE has been able to retrace for the first time the evolution of the Northern Hemisphere land carbon sink over more than five decades, based on differential CO2 measurements collected since 1958 in both hemispheres. This is a precious indicator to understand how to encourage carbon sequestration in the ground and the biomass.
A large collaboration including the Iramis and two other CEA divisions (Basic Research Division and Nuclear Energy Division) has proposed to irradiate the graphite anodes of Li-ion batteries before their first use. This technique, similar to food or medicine processing, would lead to better results than the current industrial techniques for a potentially lower cost.
An interactive video has made it possible to reconstruct the trajectories of 1,400 galaxies, including the Milky Way, over distances reaching up to 100 million light years.
The CEA, Orano and Veolia tested out a radioactive soil decontamination process in Japan between 13 and 17 November 2017.

CEA is a French government-funded technological research organisation in four main areas: low-carbon energies, defense and security, information technologies and health technologies. A prominent player in the European Research Area, it is involved in setting up collaborative projects with many partners around the world.
