Antibodies play a central role in the adaptive humoral immune responses against pathogens. These effectors can neutralize microorganisms and elicit a cytotoxic activity on target cells by downstream activation of the complement cascade or host cells. Here, I will describe a novel parasite-dependent cytotoxic activity of protective antibodies correlated with protection against malaria sporozoite infection. The mechanisms of protection at a molecular, cellular and tissular level will be addressed as well as the implications for the development of more efficient prophylactic immunotherapies and vaccines.
